The Art Department offers students a dynamic and well-rounded visual arts education led by passionate educators with diverse expertise. One teacher specializes in 2D art, guiding students through techniques in watercolor, painting, and pencil drawing to develop their foundational and expressive skills. The other teacher focuses on 3D art, bringing extensive experience in ceramics, including clay throwing and kiln use, to help students create imaginative and hands-on projects. Beyond the classroom, the department provides enriching after-school opportunities for individualized artistic exploration and regularly hosts community fundraisers such as Paint Night and the Ice Cream Social, where students showcase and sell their work to support both the school and the arts program. The Music Department is a vibrant and collaborative program led by a team of skilled musicians who are passionate about inspiring every student to explore their musical potential. Students have the opportunity to participate in a progressive band program, beginning with 6th Grade Band and advancing to a combined 7th and 8th Grade Band, fostering collaboration and growth through ensemble performance. Similarly, the chorus program supports students at various skill levels, guiding them as they develop vocal technique and work together to prepare performance pieces. In addition to traditional ensembles, students can explore small group performance, learn guitar and piano, and engage with digital music creation through online platforms. The department’s dedicated staff work closely together to create an inclusive, energetic environment where students are encouraged to discover and develop their unique musical interests.
Family and Consumer Science is a hands-on, practical course where students develop essential life skills in areas such as nutrition, cooking, personal health, and budgeting. Led by a passionate educator, the class emphasizes foundational kitchen skills and real-world applications, helping students build confidence and independence. With a strong focus on safety, technique, and personal responsibility, students learn to manage expectations in a culinary setting and gain experience that prepares them for both everyday living and chef-like environments. The World Language Department offers students a strong foundation in global communication through high school–level courses in both French and Spanish. Taught by two veteran educators with deep expertise and enthusiasm for language instruction, these classes provide rigorous academic opportunities for students ready to advance their fluency. For younger grades, the Exploring Languages and Culture course introduces students to a variety of world languages and cultural practices in an engaging, exploratory format. This entry-level experience helps students make informed decisions about pursuing formal language study in their final year at McCarthy. The Physical Education and Health Department is led by a collaborative team of three dedicated educators committed to promoting student wellness, physical fitness, and informed decision-making. Health education is typically offered in 7th grade, with some flexibility based on individual schedules, and focuses on essential topics related to adolescence, personal responsibility, and making healthy choices. The Business Literacy classes are designed to meet the diverse needs of all students, focusing on essential skills for becoming successful young professionals. The curriculum emphasizes financial literacy, effective collaboration, and independent work habits. A key highlight of the program is an interactive experience where students participate in mock interviews conducted by community members, providing valuable insight into professional expectations and constructive feedback. This inclusive class is available to students across all grade levels and abilities, preparing them for real-world challenges with confidence and practical knowledge.
